Wheaton College Artist Series

What the Wheaton College Artist Series Is — and Dr. Tony Payne’s Legacy

The Wheaton College Artist Series is a long-running, community-facing concert series hosted by the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. Its purpose is simple: bring outstanding performing artists to campus so students, faculty, and the wider Chicago western suburbs can experience world-class music and performance up close. Over the decades, the series has featured a wide range of ensembles and genres—welcoming audiences with affordable ticketing and subscription options while continuing to broaden what “concert music” can include.

For more than four decades, Dr. Tony Payne served as the general manager (and in some contexts described as director) of the Artist Series—overseeing the season planning, artist selection, and the behind-the-scenes work that makes a professional concert series thrive year after year. Wheaton notes that he served in multiple Conservatory roles for nearly 40 years, most notably in this leadership capacity for the Artist Series.

One of Dr. Payne’s defining contributions was the artistic vision he brought to programming: building seasons that could appeal to a wide audience while still challenging and expanding musical tastes. In Wheaton’s 75th-anniversary reflection on the Artist Series, Dr. Payne described the careful work of planning seasons that “inspire and satisfy” diverse interests, including artists grounded in classical traditions who also excel as improvisers and expressive, stylistically wide-ranging performers.

Under his leadership, the Artist Series became a consistent cultural anchor for the region – welcoming major performers and ensembles, supporting community engagement through the arts, and helping position Wheaton as a place where high-level artistry and thoughtful programming meet. Dr. Payne’s broader work as Director of Special Programs and his involvement in arts initiatives beyond campus further reinforced that mission of connecting education, worship, and public-facing artistic excellence.
