Tony Payne, D.M.

Associate Professor of Music Emeritus


For four decades, Dr. Payne served Wheaton College as educator, arts administrator, and General Manager of the Artist Series.


After four decades of service to the College, Dr. Payne retired from Wheaton College in 2024, concluding a distinguished academic and administrative career.

He was Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Wheaton from 1993–2013 and has served as organist at Wheaton Bible Church since 2018.

Following his retirement from Wheaton College in July 2024, Dr. Payne continues his faithful service to the church as organist, contributing his artistry and leadership to worship and community life.

A prolific composer, Dr. Payne has written and published over 100 psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. He has also composed numerous works for voice and instrument that reflect both theological depth and musical craft


Dr. Payne holds degrees in music composition from Wheaton College and Bowling Green State University, and a Doctor of Music degree in composition from Northwestern University.

His academic and artistic contributions have deeply influenced music education, church music, and the broader performing arts community.

Early childhood


His own musical journey began in youth through participation in band and choir programs, and he credits early mentors — including David Tolly, Leonard Salvo, C. David Parker, Pauline Tolly, and organist Elizabeth Williams — for inspiring his lifelong commitment to music.

Tony pursued formal studies in music composition, earning a Bachelor of Music from Wheaton College, a Master of Music from Bowling Green State University, and a Doctor of Music in Composition from Northwestern University.

Wheaton College


Dr. Tony Payne served as Associate Professor of Music at Wheaton College, where he taught composition, arranging, orchestration, and electronic music within the Conservatory of Music.

For forty years, he was General Manager of the Wheaton College Artist Series, presenting world-class artists and shaping one of the region’s most respected concert series. His leadership also included Arts Events Management, overseeing facility planning, major productions, and donor engagement.

Throughout his career, Dr. Payne remained deeply engaged in Christian worship across traditions—Evangelical, Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Russian Orthodox contexts.

Over his lifetime, he composed and published more than 100 psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, available in collected form. His work reflects theological depth, musical clarity, and a reverence for tradition.
